Documents are the most valuable and irreplaceable assets, but they often become an under-appreciated risk during a large or small disaster. Leveraging lessons learned from real-world events including Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Sandy, the 2014 east coast deep freezes, and the University of Kansas library fire, this presentation will help attendees identify documents affected by the loss, guard against security breaches and HIPAA violations, protect against further damage, know the options available to recover and restore various types of physical and electronic documents, and verify that contaminated documents are safe for future handling.

Presenter: Aaron R. Kenneston, Administrator of the Washoe County Emergency Management, Homeland Security, and Fire Suppression Program

Aaron leads the Washoe County region (50 different agencies and jurisdictions) in planning, training, responding, mitigating, and recovering from all hazards. During his almost 25 years in the military, he performed many emergency management roles and responded to floods, fire, civil unrest, Y2K activities, State-level security events, and search and rescues. As the Washoe County Emergency Manager he has served during many declared emergencies, including winter storms and avalanche, devastating wild land fires, criminal acts with active assailants, aircraft and rail accidents, and damaging floods. He has also planned, coordinated, and participated in several major disaster exercises with Regional agencies and jurisdictions. He has earned a Doctorate in Organizational Leadership, and two Masters Degrees.

Presenter: Danny Sommers, Principal and Forensic Investigator at Farr West Engineering ​

Danny Sommers has broad-based experience in the fields of mechanical, civil and environmental engineering. In addition to overseeing many large-scale construction, agricultural, and manufacturing projects, his background includes extensive involvement with estimating, funding, permitting, and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) clearance. Danny routinely works with Federal, State and local entities to ensure that projects are compliant with government requirements. Danny provides investigative and expert witness services to insurance companies and the legal community on a wide variety of issues, including structural failures, automobile accident reconstruction, fire and explosion investigations and product defects analysis. Danny earned his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Nevada Reno and is a certified fire and explosion investigator. Danny is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Northern Nevada Claims Association. He loves the outdoors and enjoys the mountains, rivers, lakes, and wildlife of Nevada. He is a Reno native, and he and his wife Robin have enjoyed raising their four children in northern Nevada. Danny is a licensed pyrotechnician, and in his spare time provides pyrotechnic displays for the Reno Aces, Pops on the River, Pro Bull Riding, the Reno Rodeo and other local events.​

Presentation by  Nevada Insurance Commissioner Barbara Richardson.

Prior to assuming the role of Nevada Insurance Commissioner, Barbara had been the New Hampshire Insurance Department's Director  of Operations and Fraud for 12 years.  She oversaw several units of the Department, including the Premium and Retaliatory Tax unit, the Criminal Fraud investigation unit, the Business unit and the Producer Licensing unit. 
Barbara is a graduate of Vassar College and has a law degree from the University of New Hampshire School of Law and an MBA from Loyola University in Chicago.  
She has been an active member on the national level of the NAIC's Producer Licensing Task Force, the Producer Licensing   Working group and the Antifraud Task Force. In addition to these duties, Barbara was an adjunct professor at the University of New Hampshire School of Law teaching insurance law.​

The Northern Nevada Claims Association's Annual Charity Bowling Tournament was a great success. We had 19 bowling teams, pizza and drinks, great St. Patrick's Day costumes, fantastic Raffle Prizes, and everyone had a really wonderful time! Proceeds benefited both CARE Chest and the South Valleys Library. The librarians joined us and their bowling team had great costumes, and the new Director of CARE Chest also attended. Thanks to everyone for their  participation!

Ed Smith is a natural resource specialist with University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, and co-manager of the Living With Fire Program. He received both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in renewable natural resources management from the University of Nevada, Reno and has received a variety of national awards for his outreach efforts. ​

Our Holiday Luncheon and Food Drive to benefit Evelyn Mount's Community Outreach was relaxing and enjoyable. It was held at the South Valleys Library and we invited to library staff to dine with us. The Library Director shared how the funds donated by the chapter from the bowling tournament are being used to benefit library patrons. It was a great Turkey Luncheon with all the trimmings, interesting conversations, and we collected several frozen turkeys and a great deal of canned goods for those in need in our community.

This class presents insurance adjusters with disaster recovery best practices and real-world examples to speed recovery time, recover damaged structures and contents, minimize secondary damage, and reduce overall risks and costs. Brian is on the national document restoration team for BELFOR Property Restoration and has participated in cleanup efforts after Hurricane Sandy and other large-loss events.

Presenter: Drone Experts from the FAA and Reno Airport Authority
Drones allow exciting possibilities. Can they be useful for claims? Can they cause claims to be filed? The FAA will provide an introduction and overview of the rules and regulations regarding the use of drones for commercial purposes, focusing on how to obtain airspace access and operate safely in Truckee Meadows and the surrounding communities.  Reno Air Traffic Control personnel will demonstrate and explain the different rules in the airspace comprising approach and departure paths of aircraft operating in and around northern Nevada and California.

Topic: Controlling Worker's Compensation Losses
Presenter: Cody Johnson, Broker at Balsinger Insurance

Cody Johnson graduated from the University of Nevada with a degree in Engineering Physics.  After working in commercial development as a risk manager, Cody joined Balsiger Insurance in 2011 to help companies with their own risk management needs.  He helps clients control costs by detailing for them the drivers of insurance premium for their given industry. 
This is done by helping clients understand their experience modification, developing a return-to-work and light-duty programs, as well as considering how to prevent or minimize losses before they happen.  Topics for presentation will include these with a focus on controlling worker's compensation losses and an analysis of how these losses are handled can be a significant driver of the rate a company will pay for insurance.
